From Newcomer to Healthcare Professional

I arrived in Canada in 2024 as a permanent resident, motivated by the country’s strong reputation as a land of opportunity. During my first six months, I actively applied for jobs and attended numerous interviews; however, I was unable to secure employment. In December 2024, I connected with WorkBC Centre Whalley, which became a defining turning point in my journey.

Through WorkBC, I received comprehensive support in resume development, job search strategies, and access to a wage subsidy program. Although this did not immediately lead to employment, I remained committed and was later enrolled in a skills enhancement training program. This opportunity enabled me to gain admission to a college program, where I successfully completed the Hospital Unit Coordinator course within six months in December 2025.

In February 2026, with the support of my Employment Counsellor, I was also able to secure a volunteer opportunity as a Dental Administrative Assistant in a dental clinic. This experience helped me build confidence, gain Canadian workplace exposure, and strengthen my professional skills. 

Following my training and volunteer experience, I continued my job search with renewed determination and, in April 2026, I secured employment as a Polysomnographic Technician. While the role differs from my initial training, it marks a meaningful and rewarding step forward in my career.

I extend my heartfelt gratitude to my Employment Counsellor, Job Coach and Case Manager, whose unwavering encouragement, professional insight, and genuine dedication consistently motivated me to persevere during challenging times. Their guidance was instrumental in shaping my path. 

I would also like to sincerely thank the Facilitators for their expertise in resume development, which played a crucial role in helping me achieve employment. I deeply appreciate WorkBC’s support and strongly encourage others facing employment challenges to take advantage of their valuable services.
