Turning a Layoff into a Career Breakthrough

In October 2024, after being laid off from my last job, I felt overwhelmed, uncertain, and emotionally drained. Losing my job was not only a financial setback, but it also deeply affected my confidence and sense of direction.

That was when I connected with an employment counsellor at WorkBC Centre Whalley.

During our initial meetings, I found myself becoming emotional. My employment counsellor handled those moments with incredible compassion, patience, and professionalism. She did not just see me as a client; she saw me as a person going through a difficult transition. She also checked in with me regularly through messages to make sure I was doing okay, which meant more to me than I can express.

Together, we created a clear action plan. She helped me enroll in workshops and programs that would rebuild my confidence and guide my career path. A major turning point was her support in helping me enroll in the Career Development Practitioner program at SFU. This program gave me the skills, clarity, and confidence I needed to take the next step in my career.

The journey was not easy. There were weeks filled with uncertainty, self-doubt, and persistence. However, with consistent guidance, structured support, and encouragement from WorkBC Centre Whalley, I was able to stay focused.

Eventually, all the effort paid off. After completing the program and following the action plan, I landed my dream job.

Looking back, I realize that WorkBC Centre Whalley provided more than employment services. They provided emotional support, structure, and belief during a time when I needed it most. I am incredibly grateful to my employment counsellor, my case manager, and the entire WorkBC Centre Whalley team for supporting me throughout my journey.
