Finding My Place After Graduation
I left university believing that my degree was my ticket in. I had spent years growing and honing both my hard and soft skills, and I was prepared to keep learning and developing in my field. I felt confident, capable, and ready to contribute.
But I quickly learned a humbling lesson: being the best person for the job does not matter if no one knows you exist. I had the technical skills, but I was missing the one skill that actually opens doors, the ability to cut through ATS filters and stand out among hundreds of other qualified applicants.
My life became a cycle of digital hope and quiet rejection. Every day, I scanned hundreds of listings. Every week, I carefully tailored resumes until the words blurred. Every month, I sent out dozens of applications into the void. I did everything the “experts” suggested, including cold emails, follow-up calls, and formatting tweaks, but the silence was deafening.
I was not just tired, I felt defeated.
Six months in, the silence became too much. Then I remembered that years ago, when my family first moved here, WorkBC Centre Whalley had been the bridge that helped my mom find her footing. I decided to follow in her footsteps.
My employment counsellor did not offer empty promises. Instead, she gave me a roadmap. We started with a workshop that helped me redefine my market value and learn how to position myself as a solution, not just a candidate. Then, an in-house specialist helped me rebuild my resume from the ground up to meet today’s demanding standards.
I began attending job fairs with a renewed sense of confidence, and eventually, I received an interview invitation. Before the interview, I used WorkBC’s mock interview resource to polish my delivery and body language. By the time I faced the interview panel, I felt prepared and ready to make a strong impression.
Today, I am proud to say that I am now employed as a General Program Instructor! I have been in the role for nearly a month, and the experience has been incredible. I am surrounded by a supportive team that continues to offer tips and advice to help me succeed within the organization.
For the first time in a long time, I feel like I am in a position where I can truly grow.
To any fresh graduate or job seeker struggling in this market, WorkBC Centre Whalley truly has your back. From the front desk to the specialized counsellors, everyone there is invested in your journey. They will give you the tools, guidance, and support to help you find your place in the world.
